Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving is, without a doubt, my favourite holiday. I love the fact that it is so uniquely American and I imagine that many celebrate in their own way because, let's face it it's a lot about food: Indians probably eat curries and Italians pasta, etc. Of course most of us have turkey, brussel sprouts, peas, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie. I had a terrific Thanksgiving. I spent it with friends who had invited many people to share the meal, we had such a fabulous time - great food, great company, lots of laughs and the fact that their three children were there with their college friends made it all the more delightful and festive. I felt very blessed and thankful.
Everything right now is delightfully heightened after my five weeks of intense meditation and silence. That type of meditation I practice is the hardest thing I ever do, but it is all I want to do. This time was even more special because the weather in Massachusetts was spectacular - a very Norman Rockwell New England fall. Warm with such beautiful light and of course the glowing colours of the changing trees.
I snuck out a few times and went horseback riding. I learned how to tack and brush the horse. It was actually a very interesting part of the retreat for me, to be mindful around a silent creature and to tap into the connection between us.
I was very happy with the result of the elections; the people spoke with one voice at last—not that I want anyone to be "defeated" it's just that this great country has fallen into the hands of a White House that holds arrogant and self-interested ideals and exhibits limited compassion for the suffering of others. Let us pray that this change really brings about a change.
Now I'm back in New York and until Christmas pretty much indentured to Barbour where I work part-time as a shop girl. I recently saw the movie "The Queen" which I absolutely loved, and it was fascinating to see the Queen with all the family and staff running around in their Barbour gear at Balmoral, her home in the Scottish Highlands
Next week I’m off to conduct an auction in Los Angeles for the Trevor Fund. I will also be speaking at St. Bede's Church in La Canada on December 3rd.
I hope to write again before Christmas . . . In the meantime, I send you all much metta. (Metta is a Pali word meaning loving-kindness.)
