Dear Friends,
I must say I'm looking forward to 2007 with a great sense of adventure - not sure exactly why because nothing really has changed or occurred in my life to spawn this sense of anticipation, but it is there nevertheless.
I've just had a glorious weekend: took a riding lesson in upstate New York on Saturday and then through a series of "coincidences" met a woman I'd last seen about twenty-five years ago. She is now the owner of a rather unusual woman's clothing shop in the little village where I had lunch with another riding friend. I walked in and lo-and-behold there she was. It was so great to reconnect. Later in the day I motored to Newburgh and stayed at the Dominican Sisters of Hope convent at the invitation of Sr. Juanita Morales. It just happened to be her seventy-fifth birthday so there was a small gathering to celebrate. At seventy-five she is so spritely and has more energy than most 30-year olds. Certainly more energy than me!
I returned Sunday afternoon to the city and for the rest of Sunday and today I have once again gone through my "stuff" and unloaded. It's such a great feeling to eliminate - this time I also went through jewelery and looked at things I know I will never wear again - I've put those pieces aside to give to friends, or the daughters of friends.
I have also made a good schedule for myself whereby I have set aside certain days for my part-time shopgirl job and the other days for personal work which includes finishing my second book! Having a set schedule feels so much more manageable. And of course I need to incorporate regular riding lessons!
I could comment on the political / Iraq scenerio but it is all too overwhelming - I take comfort in the fact that there is nothing new under the sun and whatever we humans get up to and whatever seems dire at this present moment - the sun will set this evening and rise again tomorrow or, I should say: it will appear to set and rise, because in fact it does no such thing. The world will continue to spin until it doesn't and there is no amount of goodness or evil that will change the natural law. As our dear friend Jesus said, "the rain falls on the just and the unjust." I was appalled at the execution of Saddam Hussein - in the end we showed outselves to be just the same as him.
I will be in Kentucky in February - I'm speaking there the weekend of the 16th and intend to stay over with a friend to ride for the week before moving onto Alabama the following weekend. How great is that - to be in the heart of horse-country and ride?!
My only long-term travel plans are to be in England at the end of August to mark the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana's death. It's hard to believe that ten years have passed - it still makes me so, so sad - such a beautiful woman, whenever I think of her, I always wonder "who walked among us that we didn't recognize?" I think this because her death evoked such feelings of compassion and sadness in so many people who were shocked at their own reaction.
One of my resolutions is to be more regular with this website....let us see if I can maintain my resolve! |
