Dear Friends,
Yes, the rain has been very heavy but not nearly as bad as the fearsome predictions of 50mile-an-hour winds - a savage nor'easter, the like of which hasn't been experienced in the last decade. It was certainly supposed to alter the face of Long Island. While some areas outside of New York City have suffered severe flooding, it has, thankfully, not been as devestating as was feared.
One of the fallouts of this storm has been that Barbour which sells rain gear shut!
I know I'm British because I seem to like talking about and commenting on the weather...it's a British thing, maybe because the weather there can change fifteen times a day, it's endlessly interesting.
I'm planning to be away for three weeks next month for retreat. I'm so, so looking forward to the silence, but I do plan to go riding as well. I've managed to maintain my vow not to let a week pass without being on the back of a horse. It's not an easy vow for someone who lives in Manhattan. It's a real effort to ride.
However, I have been invited to Kentucky for two weeks in October where I will mix with a lot of horsey types and hopefully ride a lot.
Easter was wonderful. I attended the services on Good Friday and the Vigil on Saturday and early morning mass on Easter Sunday. Strangely I felt good about being back in the bosom of the "Catholic" thing. I think I'm going through another phase of being Catholic. I do find a lot of the dogma so difficult and arcane to swallow - I mean the whole thing of eating someone's body and drinking their blood sounds a bit backward. Does the mind that created the amazing Universe really like that sort of ritual - seems a bit odd! Oh well, maybe I can take the good bits and surrender the rest. There are those far wiser and kinder than me who feel very comfortable with their Catholic faith.
This year will be the 10th anniversary of Mother Teresa's death. I have approached my parish church - St. Iganatius Loyola, on Park Avenue - to give a talk on Mother in the fall. It is something I would love to come about. Let us pray.
