Dear Friends,
I do apologize for this long overdue update – so much has been going on.
My back and wrist injury have completely healed – my goodness it was painful.
I have just returned from a trip to England. I had such a longing to go “home” back to my roots, And since I have been so ill, the urge was very strong – I just wanted to look the beautiful English contryside and be with people who spoke like me. I was able to do all that. I was able to go because of the great generosity of friends who gave me a ticket and some extra funds towards the rental of a car. When I arrived at Manchester airport even though I had booked a small economy vehicle all they had was a Mercedes for the same rate – so I was driving about in relative luxury with a red ribbon tied on the steering wheel as a constant reminder to drive on the left!.
I stayed in the country the whole time just soaking up England and all that I come from, it was truly a balm for my spirits. My ideal would be to have a situation where I can go back and forth easily, however, it is outrageously expensive there – uncomfortably so. In one very ordinary restaurant I found myself sending back the appetizer because as I told them, ethically I just couldn’t pay what they were asking for such a small portion – even if I had all the money in the world, I wouldn’t pay it.
The spin off from my cameo appearance in Sex & the City has been really interesting. When I arrived at Broughton Hall in Yorkshire, the staff was so excited, they were all in the entrance hall to greet me and one of them had downloaded the part of the movie I was in so I was able to see it again.
I did go to a screening of the movie – not the big, flashy, red-carpet affair but a screening for cast and crew only. There were lots of people who, like me, had small parts and then the crew: the electricians, the camera man, the caterers, hairstylists, makeup artists, etc. It was really quite wonderful because during the show, every so often you’d hear this yelp or scream as someone recognized themselves on the big screen. And when it was over, everyone stayed glued to their seat to watch the credits. I was lucky since I played the Auctioneer; my credit was under the A’s, so was up quite speedily.
It’s been a wonderful experience – so many from my past have been in touch – people from my Sotheby days, people I’ve known in the Program who have moved to other states, it’s been so much fun.
A suggestion: instead of taking a Fearless Moral Inventory of oneself where one looks at one’s defects, I suggest a Fearless Moral Inventory of ones goodness. Write down twelve good deeds. See the exact nature of those deeds: generosity, compassion, kindness, patience, etc. Then admit and claim those qualities to oneself, to another and to God. I call them the Twelve Virtues.
This is now my suggestion to those wanting to be involved in the Steps – they may not take a Fearless Moral Inventory of their defects until they have looked at their goodness.
